Pine furniture ? the importance of buying good wood

The Environment Investigation Agency (EIA) is calling for illegally logged timber to be banned.
In the past UK householders have been urged to check that their gardenfurniture, floors and kitchens do not originate from stolen trees, as Britain was reported to be the third largest importer of illegal wood in Europe.
Now ethical lifestyle magazine New Consumer has stated that a WWF publication ranks the UK just above China and India when it comes to buying illegally logged timber.
"By making a dedicated effort to source and offer products manufactured with wood from well managed forests, customers can help support forest conservation and reduce deforestation throughout the world," Scott Poynton, executive director at the Tropical Forest Trust, told the magazine.
He added that consumers can check that the wood they buy is not illegally traded by finding out if it has been approved by the Forestry Stewardship Council.
Environmental campaigners have highlighted that the loss of natural forests is the second largest cause of climate change, contributing more to annual carbon emissions than the transport sector.
They point out that if deforestation continues, in 40 years time the Amazon rainforest could be reduced to small patches of green space.
