Homeowners have been urged to take care when throwing away the wrapping their new purchases came in.
Mutual insurer LV= recently warned that potential burglars are encouraged by masses of packaging for oakfurniture and other newly-bought household goods that is left in public view.
According to research from the firm, some 37 per cent of consumers leave this sort of waste outside their homes for recycling.
This is effectively advertising to thieves the fact that the house contains new furniture and other expensive purchases.
Martin Milliner at LV= said: "If consumers want to reduce the risk of burglary, telltale signs of expensive belongings should not be left outside as this makes homes look like 'yard sales' to thieves.
"A quick trip to the local tip could save people from the traumatic - and in some cases expensive, experience of home burglary."
Some 5.3 million people are also thought to leave old pinefurniture and other goods outside their home when they buy replacements.
Unfortunately, this also alerts thieves to the fact that there are probably valuable new purchases within.
